The new runway of La Ruche School finally inaugurated

The new athletics track at the Hive School Sports Center will be inaugurated Saturday afternoon as part of the Lake Memphremagog Relay, an event that raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for youth every year. of the region.
Thedevelopment of the new athletics track was still in progress earlier this week. The project will ultimately cost close to $ 2 million, representing a cost overrun of about 10 percent when compared to the original estimate.

“Exceeding 10 percent is normal. And then we must say that we decided to add a half moon in the center to ensure that we can practice additional sports disciplines on site, “reveals Jean-Guy Gingras, the man behind the project.

The provincial government provided $ 800,000 for the new outdoor athletics track to open. The City of Magog offered an amount of $ 375,000. The MRC of Memphrémagog, the Caisse Desjardins du Lac-Memphremagog, the Christian Vachon Foundation and the School Board of Summits also participated in the financing of the project.

“Another step”

The inauguration of the new infrastructure will take place in the presence of the Minister Delegate for Education of Quebec, Isabelle Charest, Saturday. Several other dignitaries from the Magog sector should also be present to celebrate this event.

On the same day, the track will be used for the first time by runners. Dozens of children from primary schools in the Magog region will also be pitching on the brand new surface.

“This is another stage of the expansion of the La Ruche sports center that we cross with the inauguration of this new track. We had already added several gyms and a pool. Now, what we want is to build an arena with two ice creams in one place. It would complete our project, “explains Jean-Guy Gingras.

The two-rink arena project referred to by Mr. Gingras is supported by the City of Magog and is estimated at $ 25 million. Its officials hope that the governments of Quebec and Canada will provide a large part of the necessary amount.
