Session report: right turn, denounces the opposition
For the opposition, the CAQ goes too fast, without consulting. But do not see improvisation, warn the other parties. Quebec solidaire notes there “a conservative ideology”, while the Parti Québécois compares the current government to the National Union!
On the penultimate day of parliamentary proceedings, Québec Solidaire (QS) and the Parti Québécois (PQ) delivered their session summary on Friday.
The second and third oppositions to the Quebec National Assembly fired red balls at the errors made by the CAQ in recent months. Starting with the “disastrous reform of the PEQ” (Quebec Experience Program) in immigration, as said the co-spokesperson of QS, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois.
Jolin-Barrette in the sights
The Minister of Immigration, Simon Jolin-Barrette, is the preferred target of criticism of the opposition. Not only for his role in the PEQ, but also as the Government House Leader, after a busy and sometimes acrimonious session.
The interim leader of the PQ, Pascal Bérubé, emphasizes that “robotic responses” of Mr. Jolin-Barrette “lacked [in] t of humanism”. Humanism that the Péquistes deputies, passed from ten to nine during the year, brought to debate the whole session, he believes.
His teammate Martin Ouellet, for his part, proposes to Mr. Jolin-Barrette to send the following wish to Father Christmas: “Give me ears, give me a heart and I will be better.”
Quebec Solidaire affirms for its part that the Caquistes “declared war on the counter-powers”. “In a democracy, counter-powers are not decorations. It is to curb the bad reflexes of politicians, it is to prevent abuse, it is to keep the public informed, “says Nadeau-Dubois.
Continue to disturb
For 2020, QS aims to make the issue of climate change more prominent in the public debate. It is also recognized that this first full year as an official parliamentary group, with 10 MPs, has forced a fast learning curve. “We eat our crusts quickly”, illustrates co-spokesperson Manon Massé, in his colorful language.
However, there is no question for the solidarity to soften or to demand more clothing conformity of their MP for Taschereau, in Quebec, Catherine Dorion.
“Quebec Solidaire bothers, has bothered and will continue to disturb. It’s in our DNA to shake things up, and Catherine is one of our deputies who are jostling. But that did not stop us from doing our job and people heard us. In the long run, we will realize that Québec Solidaire is always moving in the same direction, “predicts Ms. Massé.
Proud of polls on the rise, the PQ must begin 2020 with a successful leadership race, according to Bérubé.
The Liberal Party (PLQ) had the same exercise the day before, Thursday. Fourteen months after losing power, the PLQ and its 28 elected representatives have “defended the interests of the people”. If the year 2019 ends with a bitter setback in the by-election in Jean-Talon, Quebec, last Monday, the Liberals want to take advantage of their leadership race to regain a positive momentum in 2020.
All these people will participate in an extension of parliamentary business on Saturday to vote under the gaggle bill number 34 on Hydro-Québec rates. The parliamentarians will then return to the Salon Bleu on February 4th.
