Juvenile porn: French native risks deportation

A non-status French national in Canada faces expulsion from the country after being sentenced in his child pornography records.
Alexis Poirier, 27, was present in court Tuesday at the Sherbrooke courthouse to waive his preliminary hearing.

More than 3,000 child porn files were discovered in the computer equipment he owned.

The lawyers on file, Me Joanny Saint-Pierre for the public prosecutor and Me Stéphanie Marcoux in defense, told the court that the file was heading for a plea of guilty.

Poirier was arrested in February 2019 in the rooming house he lived in the university district in Sherbrooke.

Poirier is charged with possessing, accessing, making available and distributing child pornography between June 2013 and February 2019.

Some of these charges carry a minimum sentence of one year of detention.

“My client is in Canada on a work permit. He has no status in the country. He will be expelled upon his release from prison, “defense lawyer Stephanie Marcoux told the court.

The analysis made by the Sûreté du Québec’s technology module clarified the charges against Alexis Poirier.

The lawyers on file must write a common factual framework before returning the file to the court. A suggestion of punishment could be made.

The guilty plea and the sentencing comments, if any, will take place on October 28th.
